The history of the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall begins around 245 million years ago, in a sea. Countless particles of sand and others were deposited and solidified into rock. The sea disappeared, and rivers shaped the impressive rocky landscape of the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall we see today.

Located on this outstanding geological heritage, a diverse and valuable natural and cultural heritage came into being. The task of the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall is to preserve this heritage and to develop the region sustainably. At all times, the central focus of the actions is the people.

The municipality of Beaufort is located in the middle of the Natur- & Geopark, and numerous businesses in the municipality have been designated as Natur- & Geopark Partners.

GEOLOGICAL HIGHLIGHTS IN Beaufort

Creek valleys “Haupeschbaach and Halerbaach”

A hike along the wild-romantic, bubbling streams Haupeschbaach and Halerbaach leads through typical V-shaped valleys. This form is created by the weathering of the rock walls. The weathered material falling from the rock faces covers the foot of the steep cliffs of sandstone with sandy and stony debris. Numerous springs emerge from the sandstone and feed the streams, so that the landscape is characerised by the water. Therefore, even on hot summer days it is pleasantly cool in the valley. Hikers can enjoy many small wooden bridges that cross the stream and a unique landscape of mossy rocks.
The stream valleys of Haupeschbaach and Halerbaach are accessible from Route 3 of the Mullerthal Trail. You can also hike on local trails W4, W5, B1 and B7.

Quarry "Steekaul Beaufort"

Some layers in the Luxembourg sandstone are well suited as rubble and ashlar. In the quarries of Beaufort and Dillingen, the rock was mined from 1835 to the mid-1970s. At the beginning of the 20th century up to 100 people worked there, meaning that the quarries had a high economic value for the region. The sandstone mined there was used locally and nationally, but also across national borders for various buildings. It became window frames, tombstones but also bridges and larger parts of buildings such as parts of the Echternach Abbey. The sandstone from the quarry near Beaufort was transported down to Grundhof in the Sûre valley with the help of a narrow-gauge railway. It had to surmount a large difference in altitude so that the narrow-gauge track has a route with three hairpins. Along the way, aisles were cut across the gaps into the rock. Arrived at the bottom, the material was then reloaded onto the "Prinz-Heinrich-Bahn", the railway in the Sûre valley.
The quarry has a great importance for nature conservation today. The sunny rock faces provide ideal habitats for wall lizards and wild bees.

The former quarry can be hiked on the nature trail "Mensch und Stein" and is located on the ExtraTour B of the Mullerthal Trail. Parking is available in Beaufort.
